Using references

When working towards improving your art, it’s important to learn how to use references. I’ve particularly struggle with how to use references. When can I consider that is safe to sell art where I’ve used references? I’m still in figuring that out. I’ve seen artists who have shared their input, and I see what others have done. In the meantime, I shared below the picture I based my horse for this ink drawing.
