The original oil painting of this print was based on an acrylic version and the dancer was looking also to the left. This painting is the second one of the Rhythmic Gymnastic series I worked on. This theme is inspired by the elegance of the sport. For this painting, I did in in vellum paper and flipped the scanned version to imagine the best option if both paintings were together. That means, that this print option the dancer is facing to the right.
My friend Elizabeth Houghtaling said the following about this piece that I could not have described it better:
I really love the one where she’s facing right! I love the whole series though 😍 I’m sure you were expressing your own emotions so I’m so sorry if this doesn’t align with your intent, but when I look at these, the duality of it all really resonates with me. There’s this vibrancy of the shorts and the ribbons but the background is so somber and her expression is stern. She’s clearly being vulnerable with her semi-nudity and her hands behind her back but the corset and again her expression gives her that strength, that wall so to speak.
Thank you Elizabeth!
